From Overwhelmed to Empowered: How DBT Distress Tolerance Skills Saved Me
Seven years ago, I found myself in the midst of a life crisis that felt overwhelming and unmanageable. Everything seemed to be falling apart, and I was struggling to keep it together. That’s when I discovered DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) and its Distress Tolerance Skills.
At first, I was skeptical. How could a set of skills help me navigate through such a tough time? But as I started applying them, I realized how much they were changing my life. The skills were like a lifeline, guiding me through moments of intense emotional distress.
One of the most impactful skills was “Distract with Acceptable Activities.” Whenever I felt my emotions becoming too overwhelming, I’d engage in activities like reading or taking a walk. It helped me shift my focus away from the turmoil and find some peace.
“Self-Soothing” was another game-changer. I learned to use my senses to comfort myself. Whether it was enjoying a warm bath (I used a lot of Bath & Body Works Aromatherapy), listening to calming music and coloring at the same time, or savoring a favorite treat, these small acts of self-care made a huge difference in my daily life.
The skill of “Radical Acceptance” was a tough one, but it taught me to accept reality as it was, without constantly fighting against it. It didn’t mean I had to like the situation, but it allowed me to stop adding unnecessary suffering by resisting what was happening and saw different perspective of resolving my situation effectively without making it worse.
Looking back, DBT Distress Tolerance Skills were instrumental in helping me cope during those challenging times. They provided me with practical tools and a new perspective that made a significant difference in my mental well-being. I still get overwhelmed with life, but I remember to use these skills and I become empowered. If you’re facing a tough period, I can’t recommend these skills enough. They truly helped me find a way through the storm and come out stronger on the other side.
